OBITUARY.
MR GEORGE BUCKLE. EX-EDITOR OF ,: THE TIMES" (United Press Association—Copyright* LONDON, March 13. Mr George Earle Buckle, M.A., Hon. D.Litt. (Oxford), Hon. LL.D. (St. Andrew's), journalist and author, is dead, at the age of eighty-one. During his career at Oxford he won the 1875 Newdigate Prize and took Ist Classes in Literae Humaniores and Modern History. "The Times" appointed him its assistant editor in 1880 and he was editor from' 1884 to 1912. He wrote several important historical works. MRS F. A. FLETCHER. (Special to the " Guardian.") AUCKLAND, March 12. A woman of and outstanding personality, Mrs Frances Ann Fletcher, of Norana Avenue, Remuera, has died, in her eighty-ninth year. She was the daughter of Mr W. Stamper, an English barrister, who was a Nelson pioneer. Miss /Stamper received lessons in painting from John Gully, an early New Zealand water-colour artist. At the age of 16 she was married to Mr John Fletcher, a member of the Christchurch firm of Fletcher, Humphreys and Company. After, the death of her husband Mrs Fletcher made two trips to Europe and 17 years ago came to live in Auckland. She contributed articles to magazines of the Theosophical" Society and showed water-colours at the annual exhibitions of the Auckland Society of Arts. When in her eigthtieth year Mrs Fletcher became one of the foundation members of the Penwomen's Club, taking an active interest to within a few months of her death. Mrs Fletcher leaves one son, Mr Edwin Fletcher, of Queensland, and three daughters, Miss Faith Fletcher, of Remuera, Mrs Luckens (Waitakere) and Mrs Guppy (England). One son fell in the Great War.
