FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From "Guardian," March 14, 1885.) Borough Estimates.—The estimated Borough receipts and expenditure for the year ending March 31, 1886, have been announced. The proposed expenditure amounts to £2570, of which the principal items are:—Formation, maintenance and repairs to streets, £490; metalling, £350; water suppply improvement, £250; channelling and asphalting, £SOO. The receipts show: Rent of reserves, £506; licenses, £645; and sundries, £l5O. The balance required will, of course, be obtained from a rate of Is in the £ on the rateable property on the valuation roll, £25,380, which will yield £1269. Ducks Stolen. —Last evening an old offender at the Police Court was arrested on a charge of stealing a couple of ducks from the yards of the Central Hotel. Meat for Soudan Troops.—lt is an ill wind that blows nobody good. The Gear Meat Preserving Company, Limited (Wellington) are busily engaged in. preserving beef for the troops in the Soudan. The tins will be packed in cases suitable for carriage by camels. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From "Guardian," March 14, 1910.) Ashburton Guards.—The eleventh annual meeting of the Ashburton Guards Rifle Volunteers was held in the orderly room iast evening. Captain W. R. Tucker presided and there were present 46 non-commissioned officers and men. The balance-sheets disclosed a satisfactory position in the capitation and No. 2 accounts. Captain E. F. Nicoll and Corporal A. \\. Claridge were.reappointed auditors and Corporal Bradshaw was appointed armourer and custodian. The officers and (Sergeants Cambridge and Hill were elected a finance committee, and the following shooting committee was appointed by ballot:— Colour-Sergeant Henderson, Sergeants Cambridge and Hill Corporals Bradshaw, Reid and W ' Gourdie, Privates Brophy and Slade. Combined Schools' Sports.—The combined schools' sports will be held on Thursday afternoon in the Ashburton Domain. The programme that has been arranged is a bright and interesting one and no doubt the function will be literally patronised by parents and the public generally. Teamsters Required.—Local labour agents state that a fairly large number of men are required as teamsters at. the present time. Judging by the number of unemployed men in the town, it would appear that this class of work is not in tneir line.. Threshing work was resumed to-day. '_.. .. ■', Demand tot* Manures. —There is at present a heavy run.on artificial.manures, and superphosphates are being freely sown with early oats. Supplies at the Fairfield Freezing Works are bought almost as soon as the manure is manufactured,
