LONDON SPECULATION
THE PRICES OF COMMODITIES. NO ACTION BY GOVERNMENT. (United Press Association —Copyright.) LONDON, Feb. 18. In the House of Commons Mr E. C. Grenfell (Conservative, City of London) inquired if the Government proposed to take any action regarding the loss of confidence in the City of London due to the recent speculations in commodities.
The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Mr A. Duff Cooper) replied that in view of the prompt measures taken in the city to minimise the effect of the speculations he did not think it would be correct to ascribe to it the fall in securities last week. Regarding the other petition already made for the compulsory winding-up of the firm of James and Shakespeare the law provided for judicial inquiry in such cases. The Government proposed to await the result of this inquiry.
