OVERCAST AND SULTRY. A steady north-westerly wind blew yesterday afternoon, and condition.? were again sultry to-day. Rain fell in a heat shower this morning, and threatened during the day when the sky clouded over. The barometric pressure, this morning was 29.79 inches, and extremes of shade temperature yesterday and last night were 83.4 degrees and 57 degrees. Two points of rain «iere recorded at the. WELLINGTON, This pay. , The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather: — General inference: A shallow depression lies across the South Island, but pressure is high to the north and east. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows: North-westerly winds predominating and freshening at times. Weather mainly fair to cloudy, but some rain in western ranges and 1 a few scattered light showers in South Canterbury. Seas rough north of Kaikoura, elsewhere moderate.
