CRICKET.

THE WOMEN’S TEST MATCH. NEW ZEALAND’S BAD START. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The first and only Test match in the itinerary of the English women’s cricket team began at Lancaster Park to-day. New Zealand batted first on a perfect wicket, but started off badly. Misses H. Buck and M. Marks both went through putting up catches at silly mid-on off Miss M. MacLagan’s bowling. Miss MaeLagan clean bowled Miss P. Savin when she had scored 3, and three wickets were down for only 6 runs. The English bowler had taken three wickets for one run. Misses R. Symonds and M. Corby plavedi cautiously and by 11.35 o’clock the' score was 10 for the loss of four wickets. Miss Hollis (Otago) hit out in scoring 24, but others could not handle the bowling of Misses Taylor and MacLagan. New Zealand made 46. At the luncheon adjournment England had scored 52 without loss. The weather was fine and there was an attendance of 6000 when play was resumed in the test between the M.G.C. and the West Indies. Vigorous fielding, despite one or two missed catches, combined with excellent wicketkeeping and fast bowling, kept down England’s score. The first 55 minutes produced 15 runs. The bruise on Wyatt’s fingers was not serious. He batted very slowly for 125 minutes.

Hammond was subdued, and took 50 minutes to score his first 15. He batted 130 minutes. Occasional flashes resulted in five boundaries: Paine luckily survived for 185 min-

utes. He hit eight fours off Constantine, although the'latter was bowling medium pace with an occasional fast one. Rolfe Grant’s puzzling slows tied down Hendren. Leyland put on three runs in 25 minutes. England collapsed after tea against the fast bowling. The wicket had become fiery. The last five men put on 28. Hylton in his final spell took three wickets for eight runs in four overs. In his last over Martindale took two for 10. Scores:—i ENGLAND. First Innings.
