HAUPTMANN PROTESTS
HIS INNOCENCE MAINTAINED. APPEAL TO THE WORLD. (United Press Association—Capyright) FLEMINGTON (N.J.), Feb. 14. - Mr Reilly, counsel for Bruno Richard Hauptmann, says that every process of the law will be used to attempt to secure" the-setting aside of the death sentence passed on his client for the murder of the Lindbergh baby.
Mr Reilly, who spent 10 minutes with. Hauptmann in his cell to-day, stated that the prisoner, who is engrossed in plans for the fight to be made to extend his lifo beyond March 18, “is pretty well broken up by the sentence.” Hauptmann is still convinced of his innocence and is visibly shaken. “He says, ‘How could anybody believe that I—the father of a child like my little Mannfried—could kill anyone else’s baby?’ ” Mr Reilly indicated that they were prepared to exhaust every last measure of the law to set aside the verdict. A worldwide appeal for new evidence will be broadcast and a “Hauptmann appeal fund,” that wdhld receive contributions from all sources, will be establishefl under the trusteeship of some bank.
