MENZEL BEATS CRAWFORD. SYDNEY, January' 19. The international triangular tennis tournament, among South Africa, Australia, and Europe, was continued in perfect weather. Surprise feature were:—J. H. Crawford's defeat by R. Menzel (Czechoslovakia), and the convincing victories of the youthful Bromwich over Maier (Spain) and Kirby (South Africa). The latter, however, wan handicapped by an injured finger. Results: — Singles,. Bromwich beat Maier, 6-2, 7-5.' Bromwich beat Kirby, 6-0, 6-2. McGrath beat G. de Stef.ani (Italy), 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Menzel beat Crawford, 8-6, 0-6, 8-6. Doubles. Crawford and McGrath beat Maier and Menzel, 2-6, 6-3. 6-3, 8-6. NORTH ISLAND TITLES. HASTINGS, January 20.
The weather was ideal at Waipawa when the championship events in the North Island tennis tournament concluded. The courts were crowded with
spectators for the finale, in which a lugh standard of play was seen. Results:— Men's Singles. Semi-final. Coomhe beat Dyer, 6-2, 6-0, 7-5. Final. Coomhe beat Russell in'four sets. Men's Doubles. Semi-final. Charters and Rousell beat Robinson and Lamb, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. Final. Charters and RousseU beat Coombe and Pearce in a strenuous match. Women's Singles. Semi-final. Miss Nicholls beat Mrs Adams, 6-0, 6-0. Final. Miss Nicholls beat Miss Howe. Women's Doubles. Semi-final. Mrs Adams and Miss Gould beat Mrs Cotterill and Miss Glenny, 6-1, 6-4. Final. Misses Nicholls and Howe beat Miss Gould and Mrs Adams. Mixed Doubles, Charters and Miss Nicholls beat Dyer and Miss Macassey in the final. W. Hooper took the schoolboys' singles from his brother, S. Hooper, after a strenuous and closely contested fight. The handicap events will finish tomorrow.
