AUCKLAND CUP WINNER. CREDENTIALS OF GOLD TRAIL. The Auckland Cup winner, Gold Trail, was bred by Mr T. H. Lovvry, and she was purchased as a yearling for loOgns. by Mr I). M. Douglas, in whose colours she has done all her racing. At two years she started off with three unplaced efforts, but she was in the money after that six. times, including three wins. Her four successes at three years included the Great Northern Guineas and the Clifford Plate. Last season she had only one success, but she did yery little racing, having to be spelled after Boxing Day, to get rid of a dry cough, which had troubled her for some time. Since she resumed racing: this season she has

been very consistent. She won at Napier Park in September, also the Pearce Handicap at Trentham r while she was placed several times, including second in the New Zealand Cup and third in the Metropolitan Handicap. The Auckland Cup, however, is easily her best and it must have been pleasing to her admirers, including her trainer, J. M. Cameron, as they have never ceased to argue, that she was a good stayer. Her sire, Chief Ruler, earned his stud reputation over short courses, but it is probable that Gold Trail got her stamina from her dam, Pure Gold, by Psychology, from Desert Gold, by All Black from Aurarius, by Malster from Auraus, by Wallace from Aura, dam of the Melbourne Cup winner, Auraria. SYNAGOGUE SOLD TO AUSTRALIA WELLINGTON, January. 3. The three-year-old colt Synagogue, recently purchased by Mr C. E. Robertson, of Wellington, will not be returning to Trentham, as a passage has been booked for him on the Wangauella, which will leave Auckland for Sydney on Saturday. Synagoguejs future racing will all be done in Australia, as it is understood, that Mr Robertson resold him to an Australian sportsman after his race in the Great Northern Derby. LEGATEE A DERBY PROSPECT. A WELL-BRED TWO-YEAR-OLD The success of Legatee in the Great Northern Foal Stakes would be very pleasing to his breeder, Mr G. M. Currie, as he is one of the, first crop of foals sired by Posterity, a Son-in-Law horse, whose yearlings attracted a lot of attention at Trentham last January. He is a half-brother to Al Jolsoa Midinette and Variant, their dam, Motley, being by Absurd from Pennon, by Coriander from Eulogy. Legatee won a race at Wanganui in September, and since then he has been placed several times. His third at Trentham this month was a good effort, as he was staying on, and he looks as if h© would take a high place among the two-year-olds now that the journeys are becoming longer, while he may be a good Derby candidate next season.
