FRIESIAN BREEDERS.
THE CANTERBURY BRANCH. (Special to the “Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A meeting of the Canterbury branch of! the New Zealand Friesian Association was held at the Show Grounds yesterday. Mr J. I. Royds (chairman) proThe chairman said the branch had not been successful, in getting the Agricultural and Pastoral Association to agree to the suggestion that animals should be allowed to compete in group classes, unnamed, provided they weie exhibited in. other classes. Tho Agiicultural and Pastoral Association was willing to afford the judge facilities for “pointing” winning animals at the conclusion of the judging. The association also advised that junior judges would be selected from the names sent forward. At the suggestion of Mr L. H. Leslie, it was decided to recommend to the New Zealand Council that all judges he notified that’ the junior judges were not to be consulted until after t,h© awards had been made. For the forthcoming Royal Show to be held at Invercargill, Messrs Leslie Hassal and Rainey expressed their willingness to enter animals to help make up a provincial group. Mr J. P. Kalaugher (secretary of the New Zealand Friesian Breeders’ Association) stated that the New Zealand Association had given £ls prize money for the group competition, and the Southland branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Association had given £4O additional prize money for the Friesian classes. All Canterbury members had been written to asking whether they intended exhibiting at the Royal Show., Mr Kalaugher stated that at least one factory was paying out on the “casein” method and was finding it very satisfactory. The dairy breed societies had expressed strong disfavour of the proposal to give in the. Dairy Control Bill such large powers to a board of three members and he was glad to see that the Government was modifying the proposed powers. The reduction in the interest charge was of great assistance to dairy farmers, but it must not be forgotten that reduced interest charges meant the keeping up of the price of lamb. Mr Kalaugher said that no one would quarrel with the .principle, hut he regretted that the association was not financially strong enough to.carry out the system yet.
