FINE ON TWO CHARGES

PUBLICATION OF A PAMPHLET. (Per Piregg Association). AUCKLAND, Nov, 9. As a sequel to' the publication of a pamphlet entitled “McArthur Strikes Back at Coates and the Kelly Gang,” Maurice Vincent Bates, Auckland manager of the Investment Executive Trust of New Zealand, Ltd., was charged in the Police Court with dispersing and also with publishing a pamphlet in which the place of the abode of the printer was not stated.; He pleaded guilty. The police sa|d that over 1500 pamphlets had been printed.. Bates said that they had been printed on instructions from Australia. The printer had been prosecuted on simi.- ■ Jar charges at Wellington. Counsel said that the offences wore only technical. The defendant had relied on the printer, who said he thought tbe printing of the firm’s name was sufficient.

The Magistrate suggested that a conviction on one charge would suffice, but the prosecuting detective said he had been instructed to press both charges. The Magistrate said lie appreciated 1 tbe defendant’s bona fides and fined him the minimum of £s' on both charges. He also suggested an application to the Minister for the remission of one fine.
