THE TURF.

TROTTING AT ADDINGTON. HAROLD LOGAN STILL CHAMPION SPRINTER, (Special to the “ Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club was again lucky enough to have ideal weather lor its meeting at Addington yesterday, and though the totalisator investments showed a decrease on last year’s figures the meeting was the most successrul held for some years. On each day the attendance was bigger than on the corresponding day last year. The racing was of the the highest standard and sensational performances were registered by horses tne equal of any that have raced in LNew Zealand. Not in the history of trotting in the Dominion have so> many high-class horses paraded at a single meeting and never have such , fast times been registered. The meeting proved that iiorses must be prepared to improve a great deal on tue times tney are assessed to do to have any ciiance ofi winning a stake at Addington. The great aeyelopment of speed during the last few years may be attributed to tne adoption ,of a Handicapping system jvhicii allows a horse to win its full value in prize money before he finishes his racing career. Tne decrease in the totalisator investments "may be attributed to one adoption of tne old style of betting on first and second horses only, in 'place of the win and place system which was in operation at the meeting held 12 months ago. The following table will show the investments for the three days as compared with the figures lor the corresponding day last year:—•

DEATH OF ARTHUR EASTWOOD. THE] LEADING LIGHTWEIGHT. Very deep and genuine regret will be felt in the sporting world at the untimely death of Arthur Eastwood, who met with fatal injuries as the result of a fall with Manetno when riding him in the Jockey Club Handicap. The* field was travelling very fast, as Pin Money is credited with running the first haltmile in 48sec, when racing between the seven and six furlong positioins, says a .southern sporting contributor. ■ investigations made by the officials found that Manetlio got on the heels of The Masquerader and fell. Cricket Bat, who was racing in behind them, jumped over the talien horse. Eastwood was regarded as the best light-weight rider in New Zealand and was very popular in the sporting world. Amongst his most notable wins were wins on Chide and Passage in the New Zealand Cup, the Stewards’ Handicap 'on /Silver Streak and Grand Sport, the Jockey Club Handicap on Irish Lancer, the Members’ Handicap on Red Heckle and Meadow Lark, the Derby, Dunedin Guineas, and Canterbury Cup on Silver Scorn, the Great Easter on Rebel Song and Charmeuse, the Winton Cup on Red Boa and the Dunedin Cup on Vintage, the Wellington Stakes on Tenterclen and Headlady, and numerous other wins in minor - events. Last season Eastwood was fifth on the list of winning jockeys with 51 wins. When waiting for the declaration or acceptances at the C.J.C. rooms on Saturday night last Eastwood was asked if Vintage had a chance in the Fendalton Handicap. “If he is right, was the reply, “he’s got a royal chance.” Eastwood said, I can get the ride. I’ll go and take it.” It was his last winning mount. He was only a miniature man in stature but a real big fellow in the saddle, and he passed away when practically just over the threshold of what promised to be a long and successful career on the turr. Eastwood did not take up riding until 21 years of age, and deserted a solicitor’s office to go into a racing stable.
