(Prom Our Own Correspondents.) LAURISTON. Mr W. Penny presided over the November meeting of the Lauriston branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. It was decided to forward the following remits for consideration by the Mid-Canterbury executive: "That in view of the continued embargo on New Zealand potatoes, we ask the Government to place an embargo upon the importation of Australian dried and preserved fruits and general merchandise. This branch also considers that the local Chamber of Commerce could assist in the matter." ' "That this branch strongly supports, the Government in its proposal to reduce rural rates 12J per cent., as this is considered the first step towards complete deration of farni lands." "That this meeting is of the opinion that the Dairy Bill is a step in the rigtit {Erection—that of controlled marketing, and that the Government be commended for bringingythe bUJ forward."

SEAFIELD Mrs R. J. Martin (president) occupied the chair at a meeting of the Seafield Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union which, was held in the Rifle Club's rooms. A motion of sympathv was passed . with Mrs J. Henry in her illness. A comprehensive report of the last executive meeting, held recently, was given by Mrs F. Johnson, An interesting demonstration on floral work was given by Mrs Clarke (Ashburton)" who was accorded a vote of thanks. A competition for a bowl of roses was won by Mrs H. Driscoll with Mrs J. Gregory second. A competition for an article made firom a yard of organdie resulted: Miss Mary Robertson 1, Miss Mary Martin 2, Mrs It. Paynes and and Miss Doreen Roberts (equal) 3. A competition for an article made from a yard qfjeretenne resulted: Mrs R. Baynes 1, Mrs J. Gregory 2, Miss M, RDbertsttfMi. Mrs •Clarke (Ashburton) judged the competition for the flowers and Mesdames F. Johnson and W. Lambie the remaining competitions. It was decided to hold a competition for a bowl, of roses at the December meeting of the branch. The hostesses were Mesdames W. Lambie and F. Johnson. RUAPUNA. The November meeting of the Ruapuna Women's Division of the Farmers Union was held in the hall on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs W. J. Allan (president) being in the chair. Correspondence from the Dominion president was read and the secretary (Miss L. Boyd) reported on the recent concert, which had proved a great success. Mi' J- 0. J. Oliver, of Temuka, wrote offering to give an arts and crafts exhibition and a demonstration of barbola work and toffee-making. The offer was accepted with thanks, the date being fixed for November 22. Sympathy was expressed with Mr M. O'Connor and Mr M. Jackson in their illness, and also with Mrs W. J. Allan (president) in her recent accident. Mrs T. Sewell, secretary of the gardening circle, distributed seeds to members and a vote of thanks was passed to the judges of; the competitions, • Mesdames G. Ross and F. Tasker. Community singing was held, Miss L. Boyd (piano) and Miss Mary McLay (violin) assisting. The competitions resulted: Bowl of mixed violas — Mrs 'A. Glasses 1, Mrs J. D. King 2, Miss D. McLay 3. Posy—Miss M. Boyd 1, Mrs T. Sewell 2, Mrs M. Jackson 3. Best bloom—Mrs T. Sewell 1, Mrs J. D. Bing 2, Miss Margaret McLay 3. Brown blow-away sponge —Mrs T. Sewell 1, Mrs W. Holland 2. Mrs M. Jackson 3. Worked handkerchief Miss Mary McLay 1, Miss Margaret McLay 2, Mrs R. Gallagher 3. An invitation was given to members to attend a garden party at the residence of Mr an/1 Mrs J. (D. King next Thursday, when members of the Women's Christian Temperance Union will hold their annual meeting. The invitation was accepted with thanks.
