THRASHED A PONY
INCIDENT AT NORSEWOOD. FOUR CHARGES FOLLOW. (Special to the " Guardian.") DANNEVIRKE, Nov. 7. Charges of cruelly beating a pony, using indecent language, assault and disorderly behaviour were preferred against Henry Perry, aged oO years, • m the DanneviiKe Magistrate's Court before Justices of the Peace. Defendant pleaded not guilty to all the charges. • Tne incidents occurred at Norsewood on Saturday. Alfred Hammond Maddock, carpenter, said he had seen defendant thrashing a horse with a whip-stock while the horse was tethered to a fence. He had seen defendant take hold of the horse's head and strike, the animal unmercifully across the forehead. The horse reared up and endeavoured to break away. Defendant had then thrashed the animal on its other side. Defendant had used filthy language, which could be heard over a considerable area Louis Cuthbert Bishop said he had cut the horse loose. He had seen defendant strike a nan twice with the whip. Defendant was fined £lO, in default two months' imprisonment with hard \ labour, for indecent language, £2, in default 14 dass' imprisonment, for assault, and was convicted and discharged on the other two charges. He was also ordered to pay £2 12s costs.
