DISAPPROVAL BY HAWKE'S BAY

HASTINGS, August 9. Hawko's Bay Rugby Union officials expressed strong disapproval of the action of the New Zealand Rugby Union in deciding that the home matches against Taranaki, Wanganui and Auckland on September 1, 6 and 8 respectively should be Ranfurly Shield challenge matches. Mr J. W. Norrie (chairman of the Management Committee) said that it'.was fair neither to the public nor to the players, many of whom came from long distances, to have three matches played in a week. Mr N. A. McKenzie, sole selector, said the decision was in direct contravention to the protection afforded Southland after Southland had lifted the shield from Wairarapa. WAIKATO DEFEATS NORTH AUCKLAND. HAMILTON, August 9. On a heavy ground Waikato defeated North Auckland by 22 points to 7. Both packs played good football, North Auckland's weakness being centred in the half-back, who failed to open up the game. Waikato scorers were Storey
