FIEJY YEARS SYNE. (From the "Guardian," June 4, 1884). Ashburton Racing Club.—The halfyearly general meeting of the Asliburton Racing Club was held on Tuesday. The attendance of members was fair, and Mr EL G. Crisp occupied the chair. The following officers were elected:—* president. Air W. C. Walker; Hudge, Mr Mathew Stitt; treasurer, Mr C. C. Fooks ; clerk of the scales, Mr .Max Friedlander; clerk of the course, Mr' A. Hewson; handicappers, open races, Mr E. Griffiths; .district races, Messrs R;. Friedlander, M. Stitt, S. Baunders arid Dr. T. Leahy; stewards, Messrs H. T. Winter, C. W. Purnell, H. Friedlander, A. Crosbie, R. Friedlander, Drs. Leahy and Ross; committee, Messrs C. \V. Puniell, A. Harrison, T. Quill, Dudley, E. G. Crisp, H. T. Winter, W. B. Denshire, D. Thomas, M. Stitt, R. Friediaiider and Dr. Ross. Mr C. O. Fooks moved and Mr C. W. Purnell seconded and it w T as carried: "That a resolution adopted at a" general meeting on March 14 last, .A instructing the committee to expend.no, more money in permanent improvements' to the present racecourse, be rescinded." It was resolved to recommend the hew committee to top-dress the course. The Recent Hurricane.—lt has cost upwards of £l5O to repair the damage to Beechers' Hotel caused by this recent hurricane. The Ashburton Band.—During an interval in the band practice last even-"" ing, the members discussed - the question of holding open air concerts in Baring Square from 4. to S on the afternoon of each Saturday. It is more than likely that this arrange- 1 , ment will be come to. We hope the band will decide before long and it is safe to predict that town and country; people alike will feel grateful. - ,;-, ';.
fWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.
(From the "Guardian," June 4,1909). Lismore Mutual Improvement Society.—The opening meeting of the Lismore Mutual Improvement Society was held in the schoolroom, on Moriday. There was a very good attendance • and the president (Mr J. R. Simpson) presided. To give wdme'n representation on the society, Mrs S. Frost was nominated as a vice-presi-dent and .one of the standing rules was amended so that a different member shall occupy the chair at every meeting. The evening was devoted to a question-box programme. Many of the i, questions were humorous-as well as instructive and were answered in a verysatisfactory manner. ~. , Presentation to Teacher.—Teachers and pupils of the Ashburton Borough School presented Miss Hewitt with a Kaiapoi rug on Monday on her leaving the school after haying teen connected with it for two years. The Rev. H. E Bellhouse (chairman of the School Committee) and Mr G. Schneider (the headmaster) praised Miss Hewitts work and character, and Miss Hewitt thanked all concerned for their present and for the kind things said about herself and her work as a teacher at the school. L, " ■' iWakanui Road Post Box.—The petitioners for postal facilities to he placed in the Wakanui Road have received, the following reply from the Postmaster (Mr R. D. Dansey).: "I beg to inform you that the petition has been favourably considered and will be given,; effect to in the course of a few days. The hours of clearing will be 9.5 a.m., 1.5 p.m. and 5.5 p.m.. " ". .". V
