A DRAWN GAME

MATCH OF BIG SCORES. AUSTRALIA SCORES 629 RUNS. SURREY’S WEARY BOWLERS. (United Press Association—Copyright). (Received This Day, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, June I. The cricket match, Australia versus Surrey was drawn. The weather was fine and the wicket fairly true. A large attendance watched the Australians pass Surrey’s first innings score of 475 for seven. Run-getting contnued under ideal conditions. Gover used a new ball and McCabe hit two fours off successive balls, Chipperfield \briskly assisting until Gover skittled his stumps with a beautiful ball. Then came a disheartening failure. Woodfull was in for only a few minutes when he failed to connect with a good out-swinger from Holmes and was well caught by Fender, low in the right hand at second slip. 5—461—1. McCabe, in . trying to hit a sixer, skied Fender and gave an edsy catch. He batted for 345' minutes and hit twenty-nine fours. He had probably the luckiest innings of his life, about eight chances being missed. McCabe, nevertheless, was brilliant and confident. Bromley, also attempting a sixer off Fender, was splendidly caught in the outfield by Gregory. Ho hit one six and eight fours. Oldfield and Grimmett enjoyed themselves against the weary howling until luncheon, when the score was 591 for seven. After Australia’s total had passed 600 in 385 minutes, Gover obtained Grimmett and getting O’Reilly caught behind the wicket. Oldfield played an excellent forcing innings. The side batted for 420 minutes. Two hours were left to play when Squires and Gregory commenced Surrey’s second innings. With 44 up Grimmett trapped Squires. _ The spiritless match dragged on wearily. Gregory and Barling were sound against a lackadaisical attack. Brown’s big hitting enlivened the closing stages in which Kippax and Bromley were given bowling practice. Scores: — SURREY. , First innings (seven wkts dec.) 470 Second Innings.
