CHARGE DISMISSED
ALLEGED MISREPRESENTATION.
COLLECTIONS FOR MEN’S HOME.
(Per Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, April ]2. The method of contribution*byi which the single men’s home in Fitzgerald Avenue is maintained was severely criticised by a Magstrate (Mr 5. D. Alosley) this morning, when dealing with Alexander Scott Collie,' on a charge of being a rogue and a vagabond in that he was guilty of collecting money by falsely representing that he was acting on behalf or the single men’s home. The charge was dismissed under the Offenders’ Probation Act. . , x
Mr Mosley ’added that it was a pity to see the good-natured British public taken down this way. If the single men’s home wanted to deserve the sympathy of the public it would have to get a different system. The present one was open to fraud. “It is quite evident to me,” said the Magistrate, “that accused was guilty, of fraud in dealing with the collection of coupons without authority Collie gave evidence that lie had been acting-manager of the home for a period and there was a considerable sum owing to him. » He had been collecting it by. the use of the coupons.
