CANTERBURY TITLES. CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING BEGUN CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. With the advantage of almost perfect weather and excellent track conditions, competitors made fast times on the tfirst day of the Canterbury amateur athletic championships yesterday. The meeting Avill be long remembered for its brilliant three miles, run by G. H. Watson (Old Boys) in lsmin 0 3-ssec. This time is well below the New Zealand standard of 15min 20sec; and records show that it is the fastest run for the Canterbury championship since the war.

Five field championships, the long jump, throwing the discus, throwing the hammer, junior high jump, 'and women's'long jump were included in the programme for the first day. There were no outstanding perform-

ances. F. T. J. French '(Technical) retained the discus title with a throw of 133 ft. 3in, and L. E. Smith (Old Bovs) won the long junjp with 21ft. D. C Simpson (Canterbury) won the hammer event with 100 ft lin. The junior high jump was won by H. W. Wilkins (Technical) with sft 4in, and the women's long jump by Miss E. Munro (Technical) with 16ft 9jjin: Results of championship events were:—

Discus Throw) P. French 1, J. Thompson 2, N. L. Uniacke 3. Distance, 123 ft Bin. Three Miles—G. H. Watson 1, H. Savage 2, T. Bartlett 3. Time, ,15'min 0 3-ssec.

Long Jump—L. E. Smith 1, G. B. Eatherne 2, J. F. Bamford 3. Distance 21ft.

Half-mile' Walk—F. W. Dukes 1, J. G. Ward 2, L. Brown 3. Time, 3min 27sec.

Hammer Throw—D. G. Simpson .1, J. D. Akins 2, N. McPhail 3. Distance, 100 ft lin.
