RAILWAY DISPUTE.
ALTERATION OF AN AWARD. STRIKE THREAT IN AUSTRALIA. (United Press Association —Copyright). SYDNEY, February 2. The Commonwealth Arbitration Court having granted the application of the New South Wales and South Australian railway authorities for a compulsory conference to- consider' a proposal to bring all transport workers under Federal jurisdiction has caused a storm of protest among the various unions, which are now governed by State tribunate. Mr J. P._Ohapple, secretary of the Australian Railways Union, stated that mass meetings would be held and the question whether direct action would be taken would depend upon the temper of the employees. Their present mood, he added, was bitter and resentful, as the accumulative decrease of railwav salaries and wages in the past five years was more than £12,000,000. Now' .those under State awards were threatened with the loss of the forty-four-hour week.
