BOWLING.
ASHBURTON CLUB NOTES. (By "Onlooker.") At the Ashburton Bowling Club the chief events of the past week were the Pennant matches with Allenton and Rakaia. Five rinks were sent to Allenton and six to Rakaia, and Ashburton lost both matches. The club has only won two Pennant matches this season, as a result of the match committee endeavouring to give as many members as possible games in these competitions, considering—and rightly so—that the game should be played for the sport and not for tho win. Great interest is now being shown in the club competitions' which have been sq far advanced that members are beginning to pick the winners. The champion singles has been reduced to three two-lifers (Biggins, McLachlan and Mactier) and eight onelifers. Biggins will play McLachlan, and Mactier has the bye. Matches played resulted: Milsom beat McElhinney, Pritchard beat David, Biggins beat O'Brien, McLachlan beat Madden (by default), Lane beat Doherty. In the champion pairs McLachlan and Doherty (s) beat Todd and Pritchard (s), and Featherston (sub) and Biggins (s) beat Cookson and Milsom (s)There are now two two-lifers and six
one-lifers left in. The game between the two-lifers, MeLaehlan and Doherty (s), and Madden and Higgins (s) should be an interesting one. Other results are:—Handicap pairs: Smith and Duiilop (s) beat Itusseil and i'ulloch (s). Handicap singles: Lane ueat (Jrawfordj EasterbrooK defeated o'iirien. Colts singles: r/atton beat wiieiinst, bnuth Ueat llbwden, '/A. Moore Beat Jones. y liie next rounds for the handicap singles and coits singles have been drawn. The club rinks have been delayed by otiier games but it is hoped to play two games in ea<sk section next Saturday. The', draw is as follows: Section A: O'Brien plays Madden and Dunn plays Doherty. Section B: Milsom plays Higgins and Easterbrook .plays .Lane.
Entries are now being received for the three-bowl double, which proved an interesting competition last year. A visit is to be paid to Liuwood on ,Saturday ; February 17, and it is hoped that eight rinks at least will make the journey.
