COUNTY CENTRES
(From Our Own Correspondents.) LOWCLIFFE. A large gathering of Lowcliffe and Coldstream residents assembled in the school on (Saturday night to bid farowell to Mr and Mrs John Brown and family, who, after many years' residence in the district, are leaving to make their home in Ashburton. Mr G. Tait (chairman), in his opening remarks, said that he was pleased to see such a large number present, 'which fact amply testified to the great esteem in which Mr and Mrs Brown and family were held. Although they would be missed from the district, he was glad to know that they were not leaving the County, and their friends would still have many opportunities of meeting them. Musical and other items were contributed by Miss Winnie Bruce, Miss Anderson, and Mr D. Bruce, Mrs D. Bruce and Mrs Archie Shaw being accompanists. Mr W. McKeage, a pioneer of the district, spoke in happy mood of his early association with Mr and Mrs Brown, of the pleasant times they had spent together, and of the firm friendship that had always existed between them. He _ wished them long life and happiness in their new sphere. Messrs McTague and Scott, on behalf of the Coldstream settlers, also spoke of the, sterling worth of Mr and Mrs Brown as good neighbours and friends. At this stage, Mr Tait presented Sir and Mrs Brown with a roll of notes. Mr Brown, rising to reply,, was greeted with hearty acclamation, and expressed his thanks for their gift and for the many kind tilings that had been said. He would always remember with pleasure his many friends of Lowcliffe and Coldstream. Sirs Brown said that a hearty welcome would always be awaiting her many friends in her new home. Mr D. Bruco (vice-president of the Lowcliffe branch of the Farmers' Union) made a presentation of a- set of razors to both Mr John Brown (a former president) and to Mr Bruce Brown (president of the branch) and spoke of the useful work done by both connection with the Union. Mr McKeage (captain of the Lowcliffe football team) spoke of the interest shown in the club by Mr Bruco Brown, who coached the team, and Mr Jack Johnston presented him with a. pair of gloves. Mr Bruce Brown, returning thanks, said it had always been a pleasure. He would take a keen interest m the club's future activities, and wished it every success. Befreshments were handed round.
HINDS.
The School Committee met at the school last evening. There were present Messrs S. Tie, J. W.cGovevin and W. P. Musson. Mr McGoverin was appointed chairman. The headmaster, in his report, stated that the average attendance for the last term was 85, with a roll number of 92. He expected not lower than 94 pupils when the school reopened. The Education Board wrote approving of a. grant of £lO to be spent on library books. The secretary was instructed to write to the Education Beard asking them to speed up the building operations at the school ,and for a final answer when the building would be started. The Education Board wrote that Miss Bell would take up duty at this school on February 6. Overcast conditions prevailed again this morning with' light rain at intervals.
