GUERNSEY CATTLE.

CHANNEL ISLAND BREEDER IN NEW ZEALAND. STOCK NEEDS IMPROVING. J 1 Special to the “Guardian.' 1 ) AUCKLAND, January 26. A return, visit i® being paid to New Zealand by Major W. Willoughby-Win-law, of-Alderney, Channel Islands, for the purpose of getting into touch with breeders of Guernsey and Alderney cattle in the Dominion. Major Wil-loughby-Winlaw, who owns a heard of pedigree Guernseys, was in New Zealand about three months ago on holiday, and then left for Australia. In Sydney he met Guernsey breeders and officials of the New South Wales Department of? Agriculture, who took him to see various herds, and then insisted that he should make an extensive tour to inspect others. “I found a large number of animals not true to type and showing all sorts of defects,” said Major WilloughbyWinlaw, on his return by the Monowai. “This led me .to offer to put Australian herd owners into closer touch with Guernsey breeding societies, in Europe and North America, and to help them in other ways to improve their stock. When I was here lately I had hardly given cattle a thought, and it occurred to me that it would be as well if I returned and offered to do the same for New Zealand owners as I was prepared to do for Australia. “Guernsey cattle,” he said, “were larger framed than Jerseys and to that extent were superior as a beef or a general purpose breed. They gave even richer milk than Jerseys. He had noticed that Guernseys and Alderneys were classified separately in New Zealand official records. This was rather strange, because in the Channel Islands no distinction was made for any purpose.

The Major mentioned that he had had to do with cattle in Australia as a hoy, and had visited New Zealand more than once. He had bought his I>resent herd about two years ago, after retiring from the Imperial Army. He hoped to spend a further month or six weeks in the Dominion.
