CLOSER SETTLEMENT

AN UNEMPLOYMENT SCHEME.

(Per Press Association), DANNEVIRKE, January 26. A conference of representatives of local bodies in tho district, social Workers and relief workers was held last evening to consider avenues’ for the reabsorption of unemployed in industry. It was decided: (1) That a strong local effort, be organised to investigate the suitable areas for a closer settlement in Southern Hawke’s Bay; and (2) that recommendations be made to the unemployment authorities to obtain and give full publicity to the British Government’s unemployment insurance scheme and to give full consideration to tho adoption of that scheme for New Zealand, in preference to the present schemes' of unemployment relief. In tho opinion of the conference, the present schemes are derogatory to the welfare of the country.
