RATANA’S BIRTHDAY.
CELEBRATIONS IN VILLAGE. (Per Press Association). WANGANUI, January 26. The sixty-first birthday celebrations of Wiremu Rat-ana, the Maori prophet, are in progress at Katana village, where there is a gathering ot about 3000 natives. The celebrations this years nro of more than usual inipoitance, as the young Maori king, Korols*, with a retinue ofl 208 followers, is among the guests. , Yesterday was occupied with speecnmaking, while to-day a sports gathering w'as held. It is stated that the yisit of the king means a great deal, for it sighifi.es the union of the tribes from the Waikato district .with those in Wanganui and other parts of this coast. As one of the executive of the Katana movement put it: “It means the fulfilling of the statements of our forefathers .that the Maori should be as one family, and not split up into various sections.”
