CAR RUNS AWAY. WELLINGTON, January 2G. Parked in a steep part of Boulcott street, a motor-car ran away this afternoon and in its career downhill struck a woman pedestrian on the pavement outside a jeweller’s shop at the Willis street intersection. The car had evidently not been put in gear and when the brakes failed to hold, it began to run downhill backwards. Quickly gathering speed, it mounted the kerbing and shattered a window in the jeweller’s shop. Mrs W. M. Ellis, of Wadestown, was knocked down, receiving abrasions to her left leg, an incised wound in a hand, and shock, while another pedestrian, a man, narrowly escaped being hit. " ‘ , COLLAPSED IN TRAM. WELLINGTON, January 26. After his collapse in a tram last evening, Mr William Gourdie, aged 53, a well-known Wellington singer, died in hospital. The tram was hound for Island Bay, and when the car was opposite the hospital stop, he collapsed. He was carried into the hospital, and later died. DEATH UNDER ANAESTHETIC. TAUMARUNUJ, January 2G. • After having some teeth extracted at ■Mr G. H. B'urtensliaw’s dental rooms this afternoon, Jessie Isabel Flett, aged 15, a daughter of Mr T. .Flett, of Ongarue, collapsed and died. Dr. W. E. Fisher administered the anaesthetic, and left the dental rooms when the patient appeared to be recovering after tho extractions but received an urgent telephone message to return. On arrival at the dental rooms he found the girl had collapsed and died.
