' FIFTY YEARS SYNE, (From the "Guardian," Jan, 26,; 1884). School Treat at Mount Somers.—, The annual treat for school children at Mount Somers came off in Mr John Hood's paddock, Mount Somers, .on Friday last, the weather being all that could be desired for the outing. The attendance was very good and included a number of people from Springbum. Messrs Williams and Burrows acted as handicappers and judges for the several athletic events and competitions: Messrs Edson and J. Hood officiated as starters, the several duties being satisfactorily carried out. The prizes consisted of toys, suitable for the various ages of the children. All those who did not succeed in winning events were made the recipients of presents. Mr A. E. Peache kindly supplied a basket of fruit and the ladies' of the district provided an abundant supply of eatables. The day was very enjoyably spent. Officiating Clergymen.—There were at the beginning of the year 235 Church of England clergymen hi New Zealand, 81 Presbyterian pastors, 86 Roman Catholic priests, 95 Wesleyan Methodist, 57 clergymen of the Presbyterian Church of Otago and Southland, 19 Congregational Independents, 16 Baptists, 17 Primitive Methodist Connection, 11 United Free 9 Lutheran, 2 of the Church of Christ,, 1 Bible Christians, 1 Free Church of Christchurch and West Melton, 1. Independent Wesleyan.

Frost.—Two degrees of frost were recorded at the Domain weather station this morning. . . iH'akatere Athletic and Social Club.— At a meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association last evening, the Hakatere Athletic and Social Club was affiliated to the Centre. Fine Crops of Rape.—Some very fine crops of rape are to be seen growing in'the Willowby swamp. Mr W. Moses has 24 acres which was sown in Nor vember fully 3ft. 6in. highland is a prolific crop. Inspection of Hospital.—The chairman of the Ashburton Hospital Board (Mi- J. Lambie), .accompanied by the chairman of the committee (Mr H. Davis) made an inspection of the. Hospital to-day and found everything satisfactory. This is the first time that Mr" Lambie, as chairman of the Board, has officially visited the "institution. Borough School Committee. A special meeting of the Ashburton Borough School Committee was held lasu evening for the purpose of appointing a pupil teacher. Mr B. T. Missen pre. sided. Only one application that ot Miss Elsa Bass, w"as received, but her qualifications being of a very high order (Miss Bass has recently passed the Junior Civil Service and Matriculation and Solicitors' 'General Knowledge examinations) it was unanimously decided to appoint her to the position." •:• !'{?■'■":■'<;
