WORK OF RESCUE
EARTHQUAKE IN INDIA. HUNDREDS OF BODIES REVEALED. PATHETIC SCENES AMONG RUINS (United Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.26 p.m.) CALCUTTA, January .24. Apart from hundreds of bodies disposed of in the first 48 hours, volunteers organised by the Salvation Army have unearthed a further 600 corpses at Monghyr alone. It is probable that anotner 1000 bodies are under the ruins. An aged woman, extricated after six days, succumbed shortly after her rescue. ' , Whole families have been found dead, locked in each other’s arms The stench of decomposing bodies makes the work of the searchers both unpleasant and dangerous. The fear of an epidemic breaking out is as strong as that of the fear of another earthquake.
