FURIOUS BATTLE

RUSSIAN CONVICTS AND TROOPS HUNDREDS OF CASUALTIES. ESCAPE ON WAY TO CAMP. (United Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) HELSINGFORS, Oct. 29. A furious battle followed the escape at Vologda of a trainload of convicts who were en route to the Archangel timber camps. The occupants of a waggon broke loose on arrival at the station. They overpowered and disarmed the guards, liberated their fellow-prisoners, set fire to the local police station and massacred the inmates.

Troops were hastened from the town and stormed the station buildings, where a fierce engagement occurred. Hundreds were killed or wounded on both sides. Many convicts fled to the forests, where soldiers are pursuing them.
