Bishop West-Watson was a passenger for the north by service car this morning. * •
Mr W. Hopwood, of Tinwald, was reported to-day to ho making rapid progress toward recovery following a heart' attack last week.
Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., developed a serious illness on Thursday, night, but was considerably better yesterday, according to a message from Wellington.
Sub-Inspector H. Martin, formerly Senior-Sergeant of Police at Ashburton, is at present in thq Wellington Hospital suffering from a serious indisposition.
Mrs E. Kelso (Dominion organising secretary of the Women’s Institute Movement) passed through Ashburton on Saturday, cn font© to Southland to form a southern Southland federation of institutes. .She lias just formed a; new federation on the'West Coast.
Mr-J. R.- Richardson was met-rhy past and present guests of- Park House at a social "function, on Saturday evening'and presented with a crystal salad bowl and entree dish by Mr G. d’Auvergne on behalf of the present guests and 1 a cheque by Mr H. G. Ferner on behalf of the past guests, in view of his approaching marriage.
The Rev. A. W. 'stuart (organising secretary for the British and Foreign Bible Society in Canterbury and Westland) paid a" visit to_ Ashburton district during the wqek-end. He preached at the Presbyterian services at Mayfield and Lagmhor yesterday, and at" the Methodist service at Willowby in the evening, Mr Stuart returned to Christchurch this afternoon.
A number of his friends met on Saturday' evening to bid farewell to Mr R,. Cap-stick, who has been resident in Ashburton for 19 years, and 1 who will leave on November 7 to take lip residence in Christchurch. Making a presentatipn of . a pipe and a tobacco pouch, Mr J. Stevenson expressed regret at Mr Capstick’s departure from Ashburton, and wished him long life and happiness in the city.
Mesdames .F. Curtis (of the executive committee of the South Canterbury Women’s Institute Federation), E. A. Cockroft ([federation press reporter), .W. J. Minogue, D. Fitzgerald (Ashburton District Inustitute), Baker, H. J. Constable ((Hampstead), H. Houston, E. Bell (Timvald), J. R<. Stevenson and J. Boothroyd (Allenton), will leave "by special train .to-morrow morning to attend the half-yearly meeting of the Federation at Timani.
