METHVEN. A mooting of "those interested in the candidature of the "Sports Queen" for tlie Methven Sub-branch of the Plunket Society's Queen Carnival was held on Thursday evening, when there was a good attendance. Mr A. G. Foreman was voted to the chair, and Mr J. Temple was appointed honorary secretary. It was decided to hold a "sports attire" dance in. November, and to endeavour to arrange with all sports clubs to hold a special sports day on the domain on November 25. It was agreed to recommend to the committee of the sub-branch that the Queen Carnival close on December 14. WILLOWBY.

The monthly meeting of the Wil-lowby-Eiffefton W ome)l ' s 'lnstitute, held' in the Willowby Hall, was well attended,'Mrs R. P'earce presiding. A motion of sympathy with Mrs R. MacGregor in her bereavement was carried. An instructive address on poultry and poultry-keeping was delivered l by Miss J. Ross. Arranged on tables in the hall were several very fine collections of cut blooms, the judges, Miss J. Ross and Miss A. C. Lloyd, 'awarding the points as follow:—Mrs B. T. Clothier and Miss M. M. Lill (equal) 1, Mrs R. K. Quinn 3, Miss A. M. Watts highly commended. During the social hour a solo with 'cello, obligato was contributed by Misses M. M. Lill and R, H. Lill, and vocal solos by Mrs R. Brodie, Rangitata Island,'and Miss Jean Taylor, the accompanistes being Mrs W. 0. Mac Kay (Christchureh) and Miss M. Taylor. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Lattimore, L. J. Pratley, V. Nicholls and C. Noble.

SEAFIELD. . i The monthly meeting of the Women's Division of t/he New Zealand Farmers' Union was held a week earlier than usual on account of the Ashburton Show. Mrs F. Johnson presided over an attendance of 30. Mrs Johnson presented the reports of the bush nurse and housekeepers' auxiliary meeting which she attended in Christchureh and of the Ashburton Division meeting held on October 20. Demonstrations of stencilling and pen-painting were given by Mrs H. Driscoll and Miss M. Bennison. A competition for puff pastry resulted: Mrs F, Johnson and Mrs J. Henry (equal) 1, Mrs R. Grice 3, Miss M. Bennison 4. A competition for a papier mache article was won by Mrs J. McDonald. The hostesses were Mcsdames W. AValler, J. Bruce, and A. P. # Bruce,

WINCHMORE. The annual meeting of the Winchmore Tennis Club was held, in the hall, and was presided over by the president (Mr H. M. Verrall). 4* long discussion took place concerning the new courts. So far only one court has been completed. It was decided to start on the other as soon as shingle and workers are available. The resignations of Miss D. McKay and Mr R. Pearson from the committee were -received with regret. Officers wore elected as follow:—Patron, Mi' H. Morris; president, Mr H. M. Verrall; vice-captain, Mr J. Scott; committee, Mrs F. A. Scott, Messrs H. Nish (chairman), K. Verrall (secretary), T. akelin (treasurer), J. Scott, E. Rooney and L. Maginness.

MAYFIELD. The annual meeting of the Mayfield. branch of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union was held in the church, the Rev. A. I). Kirkland presiding over a fair attendance. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £2 17s. It was reported! that £3o 9s Gel had been sent away to missions. A missionary letter was read from Dr. Leila Howie, of Canton. The Eev. A. ILL Kirkland gave an address on the origin and rise of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union. The election', of officers resulted as fellow:— Honorary president,, Rev. A. D. Kirkland; president, Mrs A. D. Kirkland; secretary, Mrs' D. Edmond; treasurer, Miss J. Brown: superintendent, Miss M. Edmond; harvest field secretary, Miss E. McDowell. A meeting of the Loyal Mayfield Lodge, MIT.', 1.0.G.P., .was held in the band hall, the N.'G. (Bro. E. A. Young) presiding over a very large attendance. Nominations for officers for the half-year were opened. Sick pay to the amount of 10s was passed for payment in favour of one member. Supper was handed round.

RAKAIA. Miss Alice Keane entertained more than 50 persons at the annual musical concert by her pupils on Thursday. Violin and pianoforte solos were contributed by Miss Keane, saxuphone solos and songs by Mr Luke Keane, an instrumental trio by Miss Keane (violin), Mr L. Keane (saxophone), and Joan. Hancock, (piano), pianoforte duets by Miss Keane and Mr Geoffrey Gimson, and Misses Rona iGimson and Keane; step dances by Miss P. McAnulty, and a selection of dance music by Miss Keane and Mr L. Keane. Mr J. Burrows, on behalf of the parents, congratulated Miss Keane on. the success of her pupils, and thanked Mr and Mrs Keane for the enjoyable evening. At, the conclusion of the programme a clock was presented to Miss Keane as a token of esteem. Little Clare Langley also presented Miss Keane with a bouquet. The following items were given by the pupils:—Pianoforte duets, Ruth and Alec Barclay, Ida and Rosa Crozier, Fred and Jim Burrows, and Edith Kenward and Edna. Wild ; vocal and pianoforte duets, Peggy Sheehan and Joan Hancock : recitations, Noreen and Kathleen Langley, and Betty Crcssley; folk dancing, Ida Crozier, Rona Gimson. Freda Burrows, and Rosa Crozier • songs, Edna. Kidll; pianoforte solos, Gus Langley, Mavis Annstrong, Noreen Langley, Albert Copland:, Kathleen Langley, Enid Copland, John Sheehan, Clare Langley, Ida Crozier.
