A DARING THEFT.
ENGAGEMENT RINGS STOLEN. ARREST MADE AT GREYMOUTH. (Per Press Association). GREYMOUTH, September 25. Two jeAvellers’ shops- Avere robbed of rings to-day by a man, believed to be unemployed, avlio Avas subsequently arrested. Asking to see engagement rings at Mr J Tqnnent’s shop, be distracted Mr Tennent’s attention and, removing one, he left the shop, saying that lie Avould bring his fiancee to .see the ring he liked. Mr Tennent then discovered the loss of the ring, and informed the police, but in the meantime the man had gone to Gilbert Bros.’ shop in tbo next block, where, by adopting similar tactics, lie secured, a. £27 ring from the lady assistant, avlio later folloAved and identified him in an hotel bar, as also did Mr Tennent. A constable, on arriving, saAV tire man drop one ring on the floor, and the other ring was found behind a barrel. The arrested man Avill appear in Court to-morrow.
