APPEAL TO THE KING
REFORM OF UPPER HOUSE. NEW SOUTH WALES LABOUR ACTS WITHHOLDING OF ASSENT ASKED (United Press Association—Copyright). (Received This Day, 11.10 a.m.) SPUNKY, This Day. The 'Labour Daily" states that Mr J. T. Lang has submitted a petition, to be cabled to the King and Secretary of State tor Dominion Affairs, asking his Majesty 'to refuse to instruct the Governor to assent to the liili passed by Parliament last'week, in connection with reform of the Upper House, pending an appeal to the Privy Council in equity, regarding the claim of T. PDoyle, a Legislative Councillor, which was dismissed by the Full Court. The petition sets out the Australian Labour Party has consistently supported constitutional government and desires to retain it. That there is intense dissatisfaction over the recent referendum, and that the "Labour Party and many others opposed to them on ordinary issues believe that the present Ministry is attempting to carry measures overturning popular government similar to those that had been carried in European countries." Meantime, cases have been brought by A. B. Piddiugton and T. P. Doyle to have the referendum and the State Government's actions upset. It was mentioned ill the Equity Court that the Acting-Chief Justice (the Hon. J. M. Harvey) said he found difficulty in deciding what to do. The suits should be amalgamated and the issues stated in one case before proceeding to seek an appeal to a higher authority. The case was adjourned for a week.
