BOXING.
THE ASHBURTON ASSOCIATION. Tho president (Mr H. D l . Johnston) presided at a meeting of the Ashburton Boxing Association, held last evening. Mrs M. Cowan thanked the association for tiie cheque for £l4, representing the proceeds of the benefit tournament arranged by tho association on behalf of her late husband. Mr Johnston reported on the annual meeting of the New Zealand Boxing Conference, held at Blenheim during the New Zealand boxing'championships, at which the purse for a title contest was reduced from £SO to £35. Mr Johnston announced that the Ashburton competitors, although they did not reach the finals in their respective classes, acquitted themselves very well and showed good promise. He
hoped they would continue to take ,an active interest in the sport. Thsir behaviour was excellent, and the thanks of the association were due to the trainer (Mr J. Dwyer) for the manner in which he carried out his duties. In connection with the offer of Messrs Terris and Freeman that several members of their school would give a sparring exhibition at the Tuarangi Old Men's Home, it was stated that Mrs Knight would be pleased to receive them at an early date. From reports received, it was evident that a large number of entries had been received for the novice tournament to be held at Rakaia on Tuesday night. The following officials were appointed to assist- the Rakaia Club: Referee, Mr H. D. Johnston; judges, Messrs H. 11. C. McElrea and J. Cullen, time-keeper, Mr C. B. Gass; competitors' stewards, Messrs E. Crum and J. W. Smith; scales, Messrs A. Hayston and M. Keeley; doctor's steward, Ma- F. Porter.
