COUNTY CENTRES

(From Our Own Correspondents.) METHVEN. The Rev. F. G. Brittan, of Christchurch, will conduct the services at Lyndhurst an'cl All Saints', Methven, to-morrow in place of Rev. E. A. Osmers (vicar of Methven) who is still an inmate of the Ashburton Hospital. A. meeting of the committee of the Methven Gun Club was held last evening, Mr S. H. Anderson presiding. Two new members were elected. _ The secretary reported that the live pigeon match had yielded a small profit and the result was considered satisfactory. It was decided to hold the annual club championship next Saturday. The match will be 17 clay birds all off 16yds rise. In connection with the annual D.C.L. Shield match against the Methven Miniature Rifle Club it was decided to issue a challenge for the shield, the match to take"place, if possible, on October 21. The secretary was instructed to make the necessary arrangements. It was decided -to enter a team for the annual C.A.C. Cup match to be held in Christchurch on October 28. RAKAIA. In the Methodist Church a lecture, illustrated 'by lantern slides, was given by the'Rev. A. H. Voyce on missionary work on the Island of Bougainville, in the mandated territory of 2ie\v Guinea. There was a large attendance, the Rev. K. A. Robinson presiding. On the motion of Mr H. Hop<wood, the lecturer was accorded a vote of thanks. A collection in aid of the mission was made.

A great deal of interest has been ■taken in the newly-formed Boxing Club at Rakaia, and it has been decided to hold a novice boxing tournament on Tuesday. There will be four classes —feather/light, welter and middleweights—and also local bouts. Cups have been provided for the winners and medals ior_the runners-up. An exhibition bout has been arranged between G. Terns and C. Rrosnahan. The monthly meeting of the Rakaia branch of the'Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in St. Andrew's Schoolroom, Mrs Begg presiding over a good attendance. Motions of sympathy with Mrs Petric, Spreydpn, in the death of her husband, ancLwith Mr H. Hopwood, in the death of his sister, were passed. It was decided to send a letter of congraulation to Mrs E. R. McCombs on her election to Parliament. Mrs Robinson (president of the South Canterbury district) gave an interesting 'address on the work of .the Women's Christian Temperance Union.

LYNDHURST. At the monthly meeting of the Lyndhurst branch of the Women's Institute Mrs V. Scott presided over a large attendance. Mrs Scott referred to the loss to the Chcrtsey branch of Mrs H. R.. Wilkinson (president) and a vote of sympathy with Mr Wilkinson was passed. Two new members were welcomed. The of the birthday party social, presented by the treasurer, showed a very satisfactory balance. A demonstration of the curing of skins was given by Mrs Scott, who also had on exhibition a number of articles made from cured skins,, lent by Mrs Johnson, Seafiekl. A vote 'of thanks was passed to these women by Mrs A. C. Gadd. The sealing-wax competition was won by Mrs Scott, Miss McDowell being second and Miss K. Scott third. The competition for the six heaviest hen eggs was won by Miss Collctt, Mrs !P. Prebble being second and Mrs Symes and Miss K. Scott (equal) third. A limerick competition wsjs won by Miss Collett, with Miss S. .Shaw second and Mrs Symes third. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames McQuillan, Oldfield, Olliver, P. Prebble and Miss McDowell.

A pleasant evening was spent at the fortnightly social held in the Lyndhurst Hall. The prizes in the competition were won by Mrs P. Prebble and Mr G. A. Franks and Miss Winnie Campbell and Mr G. Lilley. After supper dancing was held to music supplied by Mi\ # ind Mrs Cook, Messrs G. Lilley, Ken Oook and J. Cretney. Mr A. O. Gackl was M.C.

MAYFIELD. A successful sale of work and produce, under the auspices of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union, was held in the Ikuid Hall, the proceeds being in aid of the mission and church funds. The sum of approximately £27 was taken as a result of the effort. The following were the stall-holders: — Needlework: Mesdames J. Brown, R. Austin and W. T. Elmslie; produce: Mesdames .Robert McDowell and Ellery ; cakes: Mesdames G. J. Murdoch, H. Branch and C_Sewell; pound stall: Mesdames G. Johnston and J. McCorraick • jumble stall, Bible Class girls; nail-driving competition, hoop-la, and shooting gallery, Bible Class boys. Supper was in the hands of Alesdnmes Riley, Kin gnu, Howden, G. R. Murdoch, A. Murdoch and helpers. HINDS. At a meeting of the Basketball Club it was decided to hold the annual ball on October 12. Very heavy rain was experienced early on Tuesday morning and continued till Thursday, 86 points being registered, the most' recorded in the time fur over 12 months. Bright sunshine was experienced all clay yesterday. There was a fair attendance of members of the Mothers' Union, which was held at the church on Wednesday. Two new, members were admitted. The service was taken by the Rev. B. Tayler, who gave an inspiring address. .An adjournment was then made to the Vicarage. The new members were welcomed. Afternoon tea was handed round by ■the hostesses. Mesdames Rickard, Keiland and Mc'Crac.
