AUSTRALIANS IN CHICAGO (United Press Association—Copyright), (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 14. Hie exhibition tennis matches between the Australian Davis Cup team and leading American players were continued at Chicago to-day. F. X. Shields (United States) defeated J. B. Crawford (Australia) 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Wilmer F. Allison (United States) defeated D. !P. Turnbull 6-3, 6-3. A. Quist and D. P. Turnbull (Australia) defeated G. M. Lett and R. L. Stoeffen 1-6, 11-9, 6-3. 'Crawford won the first set 7-5, playing coolly with vigorous economy of effort. In the second set Shields brought .great power into his game, hitting every shot hard and mixing punishing drives and smashes with drop snots which fell just across the net. Shields won the second set 6-3. He conitinued his spectacular smashing game in the third set, using fast drive's to open the way to the net. Once in that position he hit for points with precision and won 6-2.
Turnbull and Allison began their match in a drizzling rain. Dropping his low deep drives within inches of the baseline the American gained a 2-0 lead. Thereafter the games went with the service until the count was 5-3 in favour of Allison, who settled matters by breaking through the Australian's service again in the ninth game. The depth of the American's shot kept his adversary away from the net, while he himself always won on the alert for an opportunity to go to forecourt, where he volleyed with great accuracy. He was also equally effective overhead. In the second set Turnbull quickly gained a lead of 2-0. Allison won three in a row, but the Australian squared at 3-3. using a disconcerting change of pace in liis service. Turnbull was playing his ground strokes with considerable steadiness, but Allison was more aggressive and quickly ran out the set, taking the next three games. In thejirst set of the doubles match the Australians won only one game, on Quist's service, after Lott and Stoeffen ran off five straight games. They also •rook the seventh to win the set 6-1. Quist and Turnbull took the second set 11-9, after what threatened to become an interminable succession of swift volley and high lobs. In the third set, which was the last of the' match, the Australians' team work functioned smootly. They took a 4-3 advantage and then broke Lett's service, upon which Turnbull won his service, taking the set 6-3 aaid the match.
