NOTICE TO QUIT

LYTTELTON BY-ELECTION. LABOUR LEADER'S VIEWS. (Per Press Association). WESTPORT, September 141 Mr H. E. Holland (Leader of the Opposition), upon his arrival from Lyttelton to-night, expressed surprise that there had been no Press messages of the statement made hy himself last evening when tho Lyttelton by-election result was known. Ho repeated Avhat he had said from Warner's balcony at Christchurch, namely, that Mrs McCombs's victory constituted ah overwhelming vote of no-confidence in the Coalition Government and, moreover, reflected public opinion throughout the country. ' It was the repudiation of the policy that had brought so much distress to the people of the country and was also an endorsement of Labour's programme. Furthermore, it was significant because the first woman to sit in the Parliament of New Zealand was a Labour Party representative.

Mrs McOombs, he ,said, would come into tho House bringing to the Coalition the people's notice to quit. Her wonderful victory would be a*factor in precipitating the general election that was already overdue and which would be welcomed by the Labour Party, for an appeal to the people would result in a Coalition landslide throughout the Dominion in proportions in keeping with that which occurred at Lyttelton.
