COUNTY CENTRES

(From Our Own Correspondents.) METHVEN The Rev. R. Morgan presided over u meeting of the Board of Managers of St. John's Church, Methven. The chairman stated that he had received an offer from Mr Hubert Carter and Mr Stanley Morgan, of Christchurch, to bring a party to give a concert in aid of the church funds. This was agreed to and the concert will take place toward the end of this mouth. Mr H. W. Rogers (president of the Canterbury Men's Hockey Association) visited Methven on Thursday and gave an address on hockey in the Methven Town Hall. There was a good attendance of hockey enthusiasts and players Mr Rogers gave an instructive talk on the game, illustrated by blackboard illustrations. He especially pointed out the necessity of a keen team spirit to make a team successful. Many questions relating to the finer points game were answered. Mr A. S. Kennedy, on behalf of those present, moved a vote of thanks to Mr Rogers for his address. This was carried by acclamation. Later all present were entertained at supper by the members of the ladies' hockey club.

COLDSTREAM. Beginning with a sea mist, rain set in on Tuesday night, and continued until yesterday.. It was accompanied by a cold south-east wind, and it is feared that farmers short of feed may have lost new-born lambs. Such losses will be counter-balanced by the benefit the rain will bring. Cereal crops were at a standstill, while land was hard to plough, especially turnip land, which has been trodden by stock during the winter. At a meeting of the library committee Mr Hansen presided. Some new books were inspected, and these will be catalogued and made available to subscribers immediately. CHERTSEY. The President (Mr W. H. Wilkinson) presided at the annual meeting of the Chertsey Tennis Club. There was a large attendance. The report showed that the club had had a very successful year, both'financially and socially, and after the new court had been paid for 'there was a credit balance. The following officers were elected:—Patron, Mr J. Connolly, M.P. ; president, Mr W. H. Wilkinson; vice-presidents, Messrs W. Robinson, ID. Lynch, and Paul Doig; chairman, Mr H. R. Wilkinson; captain, Mr H. Hargrave ; secretary, Mr W. T. Hanna; committee. Misses M. Blake, X. Robinson, R. Cameron, E. Flynn, Messrs H. Cbx and R, Fleet; delegates to county competition, Messrs H. Cox and W. T. Hanna. The official opening day was arranged for Saturday, September 23.

MAYFIELD. The monthly meeting, of the Mayfield Women's Institute was held in the band hall. In spite of the heavy rain there was a large attendance of members. Mrs Austin presided. Mrs Austin read a from the newlyapponted Dominion president, Mrs H. Paterson, Pahiatua. it was decided, to forward a, donation of 10s toward the Dominion federation expenses and a donation of 5s (Id a member) to the Governor-General's appeal fund. The agenda for the half-yearly executive meeting, to bo held in Timaru on October 23, was brought forward, and Mrs W. Whiting and Miss E. Johnstone were elected delegates to attend the meeting. It was decided to hold the monthly meeting on October 11 and the flower show on Saturday, October 14. Miss Clarkson, from the Geraldino Dental Clinic, gave a talk on the care of children's teeth. A competition for the best plate of plain biscuits was won as follows:—Mrs R. Austin 1, Miss M. Riley 2, Miss N. Goldsmith 3; best sugar-bag article, Mrs Richie 1, Miss N. Goldsmith 2. Miss M. Riley 3. A competition, "jumbled flowers," was won by Mrs W. K. Dellow. The hostesses were Mesdames Richie, W. Whiting, H. Moore, A. Murdoch, and Miss iP. Harvey.

The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Mayfield .Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., was held in the band hall, the N.G. (Bro. E. A. Young) presiding over a largo attendance. Sick pay to the amount of £1 3s 4d was passed for payment in favour of two members. One candidate was proposed for membership. It was decided to have a social hour after the next lodge meeting, to take the form of a question box. A degree lecture to confer minor degrees was conducted by Sister Elms.

After a week of line, dry weather, the heavy rain which set in on Tuesday night will be of great benefit to pastures. A total oi 106 points was registered at "Clairvale," Mayfield up to 9 o'clock yesterday morning.

HINDS. A concert Avas held in the Hinds Hall on Wednesday evening n aid of the funds of the Athletic Club. Mr A. C Wilson and party (Ashburton) presented a clever and entertaining programme. The following items were given: Selection, Regal Dance Band; opening chorus, Company ; song, Miss P. O'Grady; crosstalk, "Jack and Bert" club swinging, Miss V. Timms ; tap dance, Aliss G. Bushell and Mi' L. Wilson; song, Air W. Donley; dance, (Keel o' Tulloch), Misses M. and I. McGregor, J. Lewis, and M. Melville; topical verses, Company; song, Mr G. d'Auvergne ; tap dance, Miss H. Loudon, M. Miller, B. Stills and V. Timms; comedy ode, "Joe and Bert" ; Irish reel, Misses M. and I. McGregor, J. Lewis, M. Melville; dance, Dutch ballet, Misses B. Holland, B. Stills, R. Denley, H. Louden, V. Timms;. band, J. H. Browne and company; closing chorus, company. The accompanists wer£ Miss M. Sutherland, Mr M. McMillan, Regal Dance Band and Mr H. Montgomery. The programme concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. Mr M. Farrell (chairman of the committee) accorded the performers a hearty vote of thanks. An enjoyable dance was held after the concert. The monthly meeting of the Girls' Friendly Society was held at the Vicarage on Tuesday evening. Mrs Tayler presided over an attendance of 15. The list of summer clothing for the child

in St. Saviour's Orphanage, which the club supports, was received and it was decided to buy the articles as soon as possible. The evening was spent in making articles for the church stall. Supper was served by Misses J. Watson and N. Barrett.

WAKANUI. The monthly meeting of the Wakanui Women's Institute was held in the Wakanui Hall, Mrs T. S. Taylor presiding. It was decided to forward messages of sympathy to the relatives ol the late Mrs W. Page (mother of Mrs J. Moore. Seaview) and the late Mrs H. R. Wilkinson, of Chertsey. Miss McDowell gave an interesting demonstration of basket making with Chinese matting:. Good business was done at the sales table. A competition for sponge cake was won by Mrs ID. Butterick, with Mrs G. Leadley, jun., second. A prize for the best pot of marmalade went to Mrs G. Leadley, jun., Mrs D. Butterick being second. The 'hostesses were Mesdames Taylor, West and G. Brand.
