COUNTY CENTRES

(From Our Own Correspondents.) WILLOWBY. A largo number of people assembled in the Willowby Methodist Church on Tuesday night to hear a lecture by the Rev. A. H. Voyce (Methodist Foreign Mission Deputation). Mr Voyce, who is on furlough from the Solomon Islands, gave an interesting address on life and mission opportunities on the island of Bougainville in the New Guinea mandated territory. The vivid descriptions gave his audience many glimpses of native life, and these were followed by several fine lantern slides projected on the screen. Opportunity was also given to those interested to examine a collection of curios. A feature of the gathering was the large number of children, who followed the lecturer's remarks with keen appreciation.

Rain commenced to fall during Tuesday night a|id continued throughout yesterday, 60 points having been registered prior to 1 p.m.

RAKAIA. The ; monthly meeting of the Rakaia Women's Institute was held in St. Mark's Mrs Newman presiding over a large ' attendance. A motion cf sympathy with the relatives of Mrs H. R. Wilkinson was passed. Two new members were elected. A demonstration of cane and raffia basketmaking was given by Mrs Coatsworth. Competitions were won as follows: Patched trousers, Mrs Evison 1, Mrs Cooke 2 ; best darn, Mrs Evison 1, Miss M. Lee 2. A one-act play, "A Thread of was read, the various characters being taken by Mesdames Evison, M. V. Brown, A. E. Mead and S. Hardy, Misses W. Lee, B. McGeorge and N. Tally. - A number of basketware articles and other articles made at the Jubilee institute for the Blind, Auckland, were on view and a good number were sold. It was decided that next meeting be an open day and members were asked to bring 'small gifts for the sales table. The hostesses were Mesdames Allan, M. V. Brown and Coatsworth. The fortnightly meeting of the Edith Cavell Rebekah Lodge was held in the lodge hall en Monday evening. Sisi.tr 0. Behrns, V.G., presided over a good attendance. After the business of the lodge was finished the fortnightly cards tournament of the 1.0.0. F. and' Edith Cavell Lodges was held, the prizewinners being Mrs A. Shannon and Mr B. Breach. BUSHSIDE. , A meeting of the District Schools Sports Committee was held at Bushside to complete arrangements for the sports day te be held at Springburn on September 29. Mr S. T. Goldsmith presided. The sub-committee submitted a programme which included for the first time a 50yds and a 100yds race, a long jump and a relay race for boys and girls, under 10 years. The programme was adopted. In addition to the certificates as presented last year, it was decided to give, a certificate to the winner ef most points in each section of the championship events. It was decided to close entries on September 22. Rain, which at times fell heavily, tot in late on .Tuesday night, and was still falling .steadily yesterday morning. The rain is welcome, as winter lese.ves are almost exhausted. The lain was cold, and coming from tho nest, but lambing is not yet general.
