ITALY GETS TRADE
SUBSIDY FROM SOUTH AFRICA. 4 _ PRODUCE SENT* TO EUROPE. (United Press Association—Copyright) CAPE TOWN, Sept. 8. The Government is subsidising Italian shipping for five years, to the extent of £150,000 a year, 'to carry Union exports from ports on both the east and west coasts to Genoa from which distribution to European centres will be made. The Italian Government is subsidising the companies to the amount of £300,000. The steamers will be refrigerated and the services will start in March. AMAZEMENT IN BRITAIN. LONDON, Sept. 10. The granting of a subsidy by South Africa to Italian steamship lines has amazed British shipping circles. It : s supposed that the service is associated with Africa’s increased exports of wool, sheepskins, and hides to France and of wool, hides, skins meat and copper to Italy. MARKET FOR SCRUB BEEF. / . \ INTERESTS OF GOOD BREEDING. LONDON, Sept. 10. The “Daily Herald” says that the real reason for South Africa’s subsidy to Italian shipping companies for five years, commencing next March, ot £150,000 annually, is that the country is overrun with scrub cattle that bring only 20s to 30s a head—cattle which are of too poor a quality foi the British market, but which are suitable for the French and Italian armies, which cannot afford Argentine meat. South Africa will gladly reduce her scrubs in the interest, of breeding good cattle.
