TARIFF INQUIRY.
DUNEDIN SITTINGS.
(Per Press Association). DUNEDIN, September 11. The Tariff Commission continued its sitting his afternoon. Mr Samuel Jacobs brought before members the difficulty retailers experienced when increases were made in the duty on tobacco and cigarettes in apportioning such increase among the lower priced and most commonly consumed lines, and asked that in future impositions of duty on tobacco and cigarette tobacco duties he increased at the rate of Is 3d per lb or any multiple of such sum, and that the duty on cigarettes be imposed at the rate of 8s per 1000 or any multiple of that sum. Wholesale tobacco merchants could then charge an extra Is 4d per lb on tobacco and an extra 8s 4d on every 1000 cigarettes, this addition making provision for cush discounts to retailers.
