COUNTY CENTRES
(From Our Own Correspondents.) WESTER FIELD. An enjoyable function was held recently in the Westerfield School, the occasion being the second birthday partv of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. There was a large gathering of members and friends and visitors from Winchmore, Lismore, Ashburton and Mayfield. The president (Mrs H. Dillon) read messages of greetings from other branches and also briefly outlined the work of the Division. A concert programme was given, the items being:—Pianoforte solo, Miss Dora Helliweil; boys' quartette, Masters Don Dillon, Dave Shaw, Jim Barton and Billy Lowry; recitations, Mr T. Quaid, Masters Allan Sowdcn, and Don Dillon; songs, Mesdames W. G. Sheate and, J. Biddick, Misses O. Jamieson and Mavis Shaw, and Mr J. Wright; violin solo, Mr C. Helliweil. The accompanists were Mrs D. Shaw, Miss Higgins and Mr D. Helliweil. Community singing, led by Mr J. Wright, concluded an enjoyable programme. Following supper, the *■ room w r as cleared for dancing, music being supplied by Miss Jean Shearer and Mr J. Shearer, Extras were played by Miss Vincie Brown and Messrs C. and D. Helliweil. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss E. Wilson and Mr J. Lowry. Mr I. Fechney was M.C. The sales tables were well patronised. Those in charge we re: —Produce, Mrs J. Langdon and Miss Dillon; fancy stall, Mrs I. Fechney ; soft drinks. Mesdames C. Doig and A. Lamb; sweets, Misses G. Watson, J. Manson and M. Lowry. The singing of Auld Lang Syne brought a most enjoyable evening to a close. The monthlv meeting of the Westerfield branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the Rifle Club rooms, the president (Mrs H. Dillon) presiding over a good attendance. Mrs- A. Bray (Ashburton) gave an interesting demonstration on seao-rass stools. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Bray by Mrs G. R. Watton. It was reported that two Division housekeepers had been working in the district. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs A. Lamb and Miss Dillon.
HINDS. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Hinds Ledge, M.U.1.0.0.F., was held on Saturday evening, the N.G. (Tiro. A. R. Elms) "presiding over a good attendance. Sick pay amounting to' £4 was passed for payment in favour of two members. One candidate was initiated on behalf of the Loyal Tinwald Lodge. An invitation to attend the Loyal Pioneer Lodge's annual ball on Friday, September 15, was accepted with pleaA meeting'TJfuio school committee was held in the school on Monday evening. There were present Messrs 1. McPherson, J. MeGoverin, S. Tie, H. Donaldson and W. P. Musson. A letter was received from the Education Board stating that until advice had been received from the senior inspector concerning the attendance for August it could not recommend to the Education Department any additional alterations to the school. The secretary was instructed to write to Mr Home (manager of the Bristol Piano Company, Urristchurch) to arrange fur a concert to be held in October. A portion of the school Reserve was let to Mr Tinkler for grazing purposes. It was reported that Miss Limbrick would take up her duties as assistant mistress at the Hinds School next Monday.
