TOP-DRESSING GRASSLANDS.
EFFECT IN DRY SEASONS. As authorities present different opinions regarding the possibility of next summer being another dry season, .valuable thought can be given to the effect of shortage on pastures that have been Top-dressed with Super compared with country that has not ' been Top-dressed. At one time it was considered inadvisable to Top-dress in dry seasons. This idea is now proved fallacious. While good rainfall produces the greatest return from Topdressing, comparison of Top-dressed and non-Top-dressed grasslands over a wide variety of Canterbury country showed that Top-dressing assured earlier spring feed, carried the growing period much further, promoted deep rooting of grasses and clovers and altogether assisted the pasture to better withstand dry conditions. The present tendency to economise in farm working costs can be easily carried to a point that becomes indeed expensive and a too rigid economy in the use of fertilisers is a movement in a direction that only too frequently is ultimately decidedly expensive. Where pre-winter Top-dressing has been neglected, pastures should receive an application of from one to two cwt. of Superphosphate this month.—Advt.
