SIR H. SAMUEL'S STATEMENT.

The Minister of Trade- and Commerce (Mr Stevens) takes issue with Sir Herbert Samuel's statement at Calgary that the Imperial Conference agreements have driven the United Kingdom to discourage foreign trade, which was three times the volume of Imperial trade. Mr Stevens says: "Sir Herbert Samuel is mistaken. I see by the British Board of Trade's report for the first six months of 1933, that the total trade with foreign countries was '£294,086,000, and that with Empire countries only £201,572,000." In the same period of 1932, the total trade with foreign countries was 747,000 and with the Empire £214,258,000. British trade with foreign countries was not three times the trade within the Empire before the Imperial Conference.
