VARGA BEATS PATTERSON PALMERSTON N., August 29. In a wrestling contest to-night Count Varga beat Jack Patterson by two falls to one. The contest went to' mo sixth round. Varga secured a fall in the third round with a body press and Patterson evened in the fourth wit.i a hammerlock and body Varga secured the deciding fall in the t-ixih round with a body press. The pair were well matched and aggressive.

THE TURF. HECTOR GRAY. APPEAL FOR TRAINER'S LICENSE. WELLINGTON, August 29. An appeal against the decision of the now defunct Licensing Committee of the New Zealand Bacing Conference, in refusing to grant his application for a trainer's license for the 1933-34 season, has been lodged by H. E. Gray, the former well-known jockey and subsequently, for a.short period a trainer at Takanini. The appeal is made under Rule 102 of the Rules of Racing, which was revoked at the last annual, meeting of th© Racing Conference, but which still applies to decisions of the old Licensing Committee. The time and place for hearing the appeal will be fixed later.

NiGHTRAID'S STOCK. SOME PROMISING JUMPERS. Nightraid "lately has been making a name for himself in New Zealand as the sire of promising jumpers, and another of his stock. Star Raid, out of Bendown, won the Brush Steeplechase, two miles, at Belmont Park (Perth) on August 12. The Paladin gelding Don Quixote, who has been a flat racing failure, ran third. Star Raid's win was a surprise. On the same day the Trial Stakes, seven furlongs and a half, was won by the second favourite Megaphone (Colossus—Humoresque), and

the veteran Paper Money gelding John Bradbury ran second in the Welter Handicap, over the same distance. Both Don Quixote and Megaphone were formerly trained by J. H. Jefferd at Ngatarawa.
