MANUFACTURER'S REQUEST REDUCTION OF DUTY URGED {Per Press Association}. AUCKLAND, August 4. The unusual spectacle of a manufacturer asking for" a reduction in duties was seen at the Tariff Commission when Mr J. Walker, of Tattersfield, Ltd., gave evidence. He said that the duty on carpets and floor rugs had helped the industry to get on its feet, and he now asked that the duty should be reduced from 25 to 20 per cent., thus meeting British manufacturers halfway. He asked that the duties on foreign carpets and rugs should be 75 per cent. The main thing was to keep the tariff as low as possible, having regard to wages paid and the higher cost of plant and !»usding construction.
