LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the "Guardian," Aug. 4, 1883.) Football.—A match between the South Canterbury Football Club and an Ashburton team came off on the grounds of the former on Saturday, and resulted in the inglorious defeat of the latter. From the outset it was plain that the local men could not hope to stand the ghost of a show against their opponent's, who were heavier and more active men. As the result of practise, the Timaru men displayed great activity in passing and running, which was the principal feature of their play. Although the Ashburton fifteen were, hurriedly selected, and had had only two evenings practise together, they played remarkably well, and fought a plucky battle. Being over-matched, their efforts were fruitless, and the game terminated in a win for South Canterbury by two goals and two tries to notning. For the southerners, the play of Shirtcliffe, Eichbaum, Roberts, Wood, King, Lough, and Jones was much admired. Messrs A. A. Fooks, J. Fooks, J. Pauling, McCrodie, and Roberts did their level best to secure honours for Ashburton, and E. Hugonin's play was really creditable. Alford Forest Diamond Field.—Yesterday Messrs Baker, Olliver and Lee, the Waste Lands Commissioners, had a good day's work dealing with the applications for licenses to prospect for "metals and minerals other i than gold," upon the supposed Canterbury diamond fields. They granted all the applications, limiting the area of any one license to 320 acres and the duration of the license to six months, except in the case of the first ' two or three applications. • :;» TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian," Aug. 4, 1908.) Guards and Rifles Inspected.—A Government inspection parade of the Ashburton Guards and Rifles was held last evening. Both companies mustered fairly strong, more particularly the Guards. Officers on parade were:—. Lieutenant-Colonel McKenzie (officer in command of the South Canterbury Battalion), Captain F. Foden, Ser-geant-Major Healey, Captains G. Hefr, ford and W. Tucker, Lieutenants A. J. Childs, R, Meechan, W. McAlister, and P. L. Orr. The companies were put through battalion drill by Ser-geant-Major Healey. and before dismissing the men Lieutenant-Colonel McKenzie said good-bye, as that was the last occasion on which he would meet them as commander' of the battalion, he having tendered his resignation. Colonel McKenzie thanked the officers and men of the Ashburton companies for the support they had given him during the four years he had been in command of the battalion,, and said he felt sure that support would be given to his successor. Chess Tourney.—The local chess tourney that has been in progress in connection with the Ashburton Chess and Draughts Club during the past six weeks, was brought to a close last evening, when Mr E. G. Crisp (scr) played off and beat Mr S. Culverhouse. Mr Crisp played a fine game throughout, and his win is deserved and popular. The'Ttev. B. E. Fox, Messrs F. Necklan, Rattrav, W. Shattock. G. Service, D. Stock J. Stephens, and_L. Smith? also took part in the tourney.
