SAMOA AND NIUE.
PUBLIC SERVICE STAFF
DEPARTMENTAL INSPECTION
(Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, June 19. To make a departmental inspection of the staff of-the Public Service of the mandated territory of Western Samoa and Niue; the Public Service Commissioner (Mr P. Verschaffelt) and the Secretary for External Affairs (Mr Berendsen) will leave AVellington by the Maui Pomare on Wednesday. They will be absent from the Dominion for seven weeks, being due back on August 8. During Mr Berendsen's absence Mr A. B. Ross," of the External Affairs Department, will act as Secretary .for External Affairs. Mr A. D. Thomson will act as Commissioner for Mr Verschaffelt. Mr Thomson was Assistant Public, Service Commissioner from 1913 to 1920, retiring from the Public Service in the latter year. At one time, Air Thomson was a member of the Magistracy, being Stipendiary Magistrate at Palmerston North from 1903 to 1912. Previous to his appointment to the Bench, he was in the Department of Justice.
