THE DUTY. ON CARPETS. EVIDENCE BEFORE COMMISSION. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. A request for reduction of the duties on imported carpets was made to the Tariff Commission by William Manson, manager of James Temple and Co., who considered that 25 per cent, was excessive for revenue purposes and afforded unnecessarily high protection to local industry. He said there was only one New Zealand manufacturer, and he practically confined his activities to making reversible rugs. A • reasonable protection would be 15 per nent. "We would like to see,'' said witness, "some method devised whereby protection to a local manufacturer would bo restricted to the particular article he was producing.
