' INVESTIGATOR WINS A PRIZE. ('United Press Association—Copyright). SYDNEY, June 19. According to Mr J. Whiddon (director of the New South. Wales State tottery), the Now Zealand Parliament next session will be asked to approve of legislation for the conduct of Government lotteries in the Dominion. It is estimated that upwards "of 9000 applications for New South Wales lottery tickets reach Sydney from New Zealand each week. One of the major prizes in the New South Wales State lottery to-day was drawn by Mr Neil McArthur, of Wellington, New Zealand, who is reported to be inquiring into lottery systems in Australia on behalf of the New Zealand Government. PURELY PRIVATE STUDY. STATEMENT BY MR McARTHUR. (Received'This Day, 1.40 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Mr Neil McArthur denies the cotrectness of Mr Whiddon's remarks that the New Zealand • Government is contemplating legalising lotteries. , Mr McArthur says he is merely studying privately the working of the lottery systems in Australia. NO OFFICIAL STANDING. AN EMPHATIC DENIAL. WELLINGTON, June 19. The statement in the Sydney cablegram that Mr McArthur is inquiring into lottery systems in Australia on behalf of the New Zealand Government was given an emphatic denial in official circles to-night. Any inquiry that Mr McArthur was making, it was said, was being made purely in a private capacity. His visit to Australia has no official standing so far as the New Zealand Government is concerned. NO LEGISLATION INTENDED.

MINISTER'S EMPHATIC DENIAL

WELLINGTON. This Day

The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. J. A. Young) emphatically denied any suggestion that Mr McArthur is representing the New Zealand Government in Sydney, or that the New Zealand Government is making any inquiry into the question of running a State lottery. He also stated that there was no intention on the part of the Government to introduce during the coming session legislation for a lottery. «
