THE WEATHER.

OVERCAST AND COLD. Conditions in Ashburton to-day were overcast and cold the sky remaining clouded' over since early morning. A frost of o.<i degrees was recorded and a cold wind blew from a westerly direction off the mountains. The barometric pressure at 9 o'clock this morning was 30.14 inches, compared with 30.25 inches yesterday morning. The maximum shade temperature recorded at the Domain weather station yesterday was 47.6 degrees and the minimum last night_ 29,8 degrees. Extreme readings of the thermometer on Thursday were 45.7 degrees and 25.9 degrees. As a result of a light shower during the one point of rain was registered this morning.

TO-DAY'S FORECAST. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. 1 The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather: General inference: An anti-cyclone still extends from the North Tasman Sea across southern New Zealand, but its intensity has decreased somewhat. A cyclone- has apparently been moving southward from the Kermadecs. A .slight low pressure «ave is advancing across the South Tasman. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamai-u is as follows: Fresh to strong southerly winds from Banks Peninsula northwards, light variable winds thence- southwards. Weather: Cold and changeable, with scattered showers mainly n the coast. Seas: Heavy between Kaikoura and Cape Campbell and moderate south of Cape Campbell.
